NICENESS HORSE BUTT ENGINEER SANDALS “NEWELL”
A new leather shoe from NICENESS has arrived.
Every season, we make sure to order from NICENESS’s leather shoe collection.
This season’s new Engineer Sandal caught my eye as soon as I saw the sample.
At the trade show, Mr. Go told me, “We’ve made another pair of shoes this time that Takahashi-san is bound to like,” and the moment I saw them in person, I knew I had to place an order.
Before starting RASSEMBLE, I worked at a world-famous specialty shoe store, so I’ve seen more than my share of classic leather shoes. (I still love them, of course, and wear them often.)
That’s exactly why NICENESS’s completely new takes on footwear feel so fresh and exciting every time I see them.
This new style takes engineer boots as its reference, retaining their upturned tongues, buckle straps, and distinctive rounded toes while seemingly cutting away the shaft to create an entirely new silhouette.
The upper is made from “Class,” the finest horsebutt leather from Italian tannery MARYAM. Horsebutt is made by tanning the dense fibers of a horse’s hindquarters with tannins and finishing the leather with oil. Its rich oil content makes it supple and allows it to develop a beautiful patina over time.
The brown in particular will deepen in color with repeated care.
The outsole features a 7 mm, oil-resistant VIBRAM #705 half sole, giving the shoe a double-sole construction.
Thanks to the upper and sole construction, you can wear them in the rain without worry, which is a welcome bonus.
The spirit of the era is something NICENESS values in its approach to making things.
True to that ethos, this shoe carries forward the spirit of engineer boots, originally developed for oil workers and engineers in the early 20th century, while offering a freer, lighter way to wear them for people today.
