Ulterior Essential Tubular Crew-Neck T-Shirt

This T-shirt is made from tubular loopwheel jersey knitted on a vintage loopwheel machine, one of only a handful still in operation in Japan.

The loosely twisted yarn is knitted at a tight gauge, but the old-fashioned loopwheel machine works slowly, putting no tension on the yarn. The result is a dense yet airy fabric with a soft feel—something modern, high-speed sinker knitting machines simply cannot replicate.

With repeated washing, the knit tightens and its character deepens—this is truly a T-shirt that gets better with age! There are countless plain T-shirts out there, but when you find a favorite, you’ll probably want to buy a few and keep them in rotation.

This ULTERIOR T-shirt is an ideal one in my book. I’ve worn it since the brand’s previous incarnation, Salvy, and of course I’ve already picked one up this time, too. It has just the right weight, isn’t see-through when worn on its own, and works year-round as an undershirt.
